Learn what to look for when choosing a home air hockey table, including size, build quality, and key features. Compare the Air FX Pro and NHL Air FX Pro models.
Quick answer
For a home game room, focus on table size, build materials, and blower power. The Air FX Pro Air Hockey Table offers arcade-grade steel construction with hardwood accents, while the NHL Air FX Pro adds officially licensed team graphics and LED lighting for a more immersive experience.
Size matters for your space and play style
Air hockey tables come in various lengths, but for serious play you want a full-size surface. A regulation-size table (around 8 feet) gives pucks room to move and mimics arcade play. Measure your room to allow at least 3 feet of clearance on each side for swinging a mallet.
Smaller tables save space but limit shot angles and speed. If you have the room, a full-size table like the Air FX Pro models provides a more authentic experience.
Build quality determines longevity
Look for powder-coated steel frames and solid playfield surfaces. The Air FX Pro Air Hockey Table uses American-made, powder-coated steel with hardwood accents, making it durable enough for regular family use. Cheaper tables with plastic frames warp over time and produce uneven airflow.
The NHL Air FX Pro uses arcade-grade materials as well, with the added benefit of NHL team graphics. Both tables require two people for assembly, so plan ahead.
Blower and airflow: the heart of the game
A quiet, powerful blower creates a consistent air cushion that lets the puck glide smoothly. The Air FX Pro tables include a high-performance blower designed for home arcade use. If you hear the blower struggling or the puck drags, the table likely has an undersized motor.
Both the Air FX Pro and NHL Air FX Pro deliver reliable airflow, but the NHL version adds LED lighting that highlights the playing surface and team graphics.
How to choose your air hockey table
- Measure your room first: Allow at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides. A full-size table (8 feet long) needs a room about 14 x 10 feet. If space is tight, consider a smaller table but accept less realistic play. Draw a floor plan with the table dimensions before buying.
- Check the build materials: Powder-coated steel frames and a solid playfield are essential. Avoid tables with plastic frames or thin particleboard tops. Both Air FX Pro models use steel and are made in the USA. Steel construction costs more upfront but saves replacement costs later.
- Decide on extras: graphics and lighting: The standard Air FX Pro offers hardwood accents for a classic look. The NHL Air FX Pro adds licensed team graphics and LED lighting for a themed game room. Choose based on whether you want a neutral or branded appearance.
